Recipient of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, Ingrid Betancourt was a presidential candidate in Colombia who was kidnapped by rebels in 2002 and held captive for six years. After her dramatic rescue, she was celebrated internationally as a symbol of human resistance and freedom, but not without some controversy.
