From the pages of arthasastra! Hoarders, Blackmarketeers & Smugglers!

“merchants and pirates were for a long time one and the same person. Even today mercantile morality is really nothing but a refinement of piratical morality.” When Nietzsche, the German philosopher, uttered these words in the nineteenth century, he was actually echoing the views of that kautiliya of Arthasastra held on the same matter about 2,250 years before him. For Kautiliya in his Fourth Book of the Arthasastra entitled the Removal of Thorns has devoted the entire second chapter of the book to the protection of the people from the avarice and trickeries of the trading classes. In fact the name of the chapter itself is Protection against Merchants. By the use of the carefully chosen word “Protection,” Kautiliya clearly suggests to us that he considers the merchant as an enemy of society and that people should be afforded protection against his onslaughts on them in the same way you provide protection against pestilences, famines and fire. While one may hesitates to endorse either Kautiliya or Nietzsche completely in their considering the trader as an enemy of the people or a pirate, no one would disagree in classifying the hoarder, the blackmarketeer, the smuggler, the adulterator and the swindler who uses short weights and measures among them as No.1 enemies of the public and treat them as such. These public enemies become the more odious when they practice their hateful activities in the field of essential stuffs especially in the field of trade in food materials.
இன்று உலகெங்கிலும் அலையடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் புரட்சிகர ஊற்றெழுச்சி அரபு மக்களின் பேரெழுச்சி ஆகும். ஸ்பெயினின் இன்டிக்னோக்கள், வால்ஸ்டீரிட்டைக் கைப்பற்றுவோம் என எழுந்த அமெரிக்க மூலதன எதிர்ப்பாளர்கள், இலண்டன் தெருக்கிளர்ச்சியாளர்கள் என அது உலகெங்கிலும் தனது தடங்களை விட்டுச் சென்றிருக்கிறது. இஸ்லாமிய மரபில் ஜனநாயகம் என்பது சாத்தியமில்லை என்பவர்களை மறுத்தபடி, அரபு உலகெங்கிலும் எழுந்த ஜனநாயகத்திற்கான வெகுமக்கள் திரள் எழுச்சி அது. மரபார்ந்த கருத்தியல் வரையறைகளைத் தாண்டி, காலனியச் சுமைகளை தமதுதோள்களில் இருந்து உதறியபடி, அரபு நிலப்படத்தை மறுவரையறை செய்த மக்கள் எழுச்சி அது. இஸ்லாம் என்பது வன்முறை வாழ்முறை என்பதனை மறுத்து, வன்முறையல்லாத புதிய மக்கள்திரள் போராட்டமுறை குறித்த தேடலை உலகெங்கிலும் எழுப்பியது அரபுப் புரட்சியின் அனுபவங்கள். இன்றைய உலகில் அரபுப் புரட்சியின் அரசியல் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும், புதிய போராட்ட வடிவங்களுக்கான அதனது தேடலையும் ஆவணப்படுத்தும் முகமாக எழுதப்பட்ட கட்டுரைகள் இங்கு நூல் வடிவம் பெற்றுள்ளன.
தமிழ் சினிமாவில் இலக்கியம் எழுத்து பற்றி எழுதச் சொல்லி எனக்குப் பணிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது சைனாவில் இட்லியும் தேங்காய்ச் சட்னியும் தேடினால் கிடைக்கலாமோ என்னவோ. லாப்லாந்தில் மொந்தன் பழம் எங்கே கிடைக்கும் என்று தேடலாம். இர்குட்ஸ்க் நகரில் காலையில் எழுந்ததும் இடியாப்பமும் குருமாவும் தேடலாம். நாமும் கடந்த 90 வருட காலமாக தமிழுக்கு ஒரு ஆவேசத்தோடு தொண்டை வரள கோஷமிட்டுக்கொண்டு தான் இருக்கிறோம். தமிழ் வளர்ச்சியே தன் கொள்கையாகக் கொண்ட இயக்கம் அரசுக்கு வந்து இரண்டு தலைமுறை ஆன பிறகும், தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்குத் தமிழ்ப் பெயர் வைத்தால் வரி விலக்கு என்று ஆசை காட்ட வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. ஒரு தமிழனுக்கு தன் இயல்பில் பேச, வாழ, வரிவிலக்கு என்ற ஆசை காட்ட வேண்டுமென்றால், தமிழ் வாழ்க்கை தன் இயல்பில் இல்லாத ஒரு போலியைத் தானே ஃபாஷனாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்கிறது என்று அர்த்தம்? அதுவும் தமிழினத் தலைவர் ஆட்சி நடக்கும் போது?. ஒரு நீண்ட காலமாக தமிழ்த் தொலைக்காட்சி ஒன்றில் தமிழ் பேசும் கதாநாயகியைத் தேடும் முயற்சி ஒரு தொடராக வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. தமிழ்ப் பெயர்கள் இப்போது ஃபாஷனில் இல்லை. தன் தமிழ்ப் பற்றை உலகுக்கு பறை சாற்றும் நோக்கில், ஒரு காலத்தில் தம் பெயரையே ஒரு மாதிரியாக தமிழ்ப் பெயர்களாக மாற்றி வந்தார்கள் நம்மில் பலர். தமிழ்ப்பெயர் என்றால் அது சங்க காலத்தில் புழங்கிய பெயர்களாக இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பது சொல்லப்படாத விதி. ஆனால் இப்போது ஸ்ரேயா, நமீதா, ;பூஜா, அபூ, தமன்னா, டாப்ஸி, ஹன்சிகா மோட்வானி அனூஷ்கா, ரீமா சென், குஷ்பு, ஆண்ட்ரியா என்ற பெயர்களில், தமிழ் தெரியாத வடநாட்டு நங்கைகளிடம் தான் நம் தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிகர்களுக்கு கவர்ச்சி. தமிழ் நடிகர்கள் பெயர்கள் கூட இப்போது ரொம்ப ஃபாஷனோடு, பரத், அஜீத், தனுஷ், விஜய் காந்த், ஸ்ரீகாந்த் இப்படித்தான் யாரையும் குறை சொல்லிப்பயனில்லை. பேச்சில் தான் தமிழ்ப்பற்று இருந்ததே தவிர, உள் மனசு என்னவோ முற்றிலும் வேறாகத் தான் ஆசை கொண்டிருந்தது.
