கடந்த சனிக்கிழமை செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 7-ம் தேதியன்று பி.என். ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் தனது 85-ம் வயதில் காலமானார் என்ற செய்தியை நான் இணையத்தில் தான் படித்தேன். அவ்வப்போது இலங்கைத் தமிழர் பற்றிய செய்திகளை, தமிழ் நாட்டுச் செய்திகளைத் தொகுத்து திருவள்ளுவர் இலக்குவனார் அனுப்பும் மடல் ஒன்றில் இந்த செய்தியும் இருந்தது. தமிழ்த் தினசரிப் பத்திரிகை எதிலும் இந்த செய்தி வந்துள்ளதா என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியாது. வாரப் பத்திரிகைகள் எதுவும் இதை ஒரு பொருட்டாகக் கருதுமா என்பதும் எனக்குத் தெரியாது. எனக்கு இந்தப் புறக்கணிப்பு அதிர்ச்சி தரவில்லை. இது இந்தக் காலத்தில் நடப்பது தான், ஒன்றும் புதிதல்ல என்ற காலத்தை ஒட்டி உணரும் புத்தி இருந்தாலும், வேதனையாகத்தான் இருந்தது. இப்போது இது குறித்து நான் எழுதும் போது எந்தனை பேர் தமிழர்கள், இணையங்களில் தொடர்பு கொண்டவர்கள் என் வேதனையைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வார்கள் என்பதும் எனக்குத் தெரியாது. ஒரு வேளை நான் யாரையும் குற்றம் சொல்ல முடியாது என்பதும் தெரிகிறது. பி.என். ஸ்ரீனிவாசனும் இது பற்றியெல்லாம் கவலைப் பட்டவரில்லை. ஆனால் தனக்கு எது சரி, எது நடப்பது சரியல்ல, எது சரி செய்யப் படவேண்டும் என்று தோன்றுகிறதோ அதைச் செய்வதில் முனைப்புக் கொண்டு செயல்பட்டு வந்தார். அது என்ன பலனைத் தருகிறது, யார் தனக்கு துணைவருவார்கள் என்பது பற்றியும் அவர் கவலைப் பட்டவர் இல்லை. அப்படி ஒரு ஜீவன், அப்படி ஒரு வாழ்க்கை. தான் வாழும் காலத்தின் தர்மங்களை, வாழ்க்கை முறைகளை, நம்பிக்கைகளைப் பற்றிக் கவலை கொள்ளாது தன் வழியில் தான் நினைத்ததை முடிந்த அளவில் செயல் படுத்தி வந்தவர். அவர் வேறு ஒரு யுகத்தில், யுக தர்மத்தில் வாழ்ந்தவர். அந்த தர்மங்கள் இப்பொது அழிந்து விட்டன். செலவாணி அற்றுப் போய்விட்டன. அவரது மரணத்தைப் பற்றி அடுத்த நாளே தனது மடலில் எழுதிய திருவள்ளுவர் இலக்குவனார் பின் வரும் செய்தியையும் உடன் தருகிறார்.

Subtitled ‘Fall From Innocence’, it is a story about man’s search for the meaning of his life. As Stephen King points out ‘to the three Ds – death, destruction and destiny where would be without them?’, this short novella is about the death and uncertainty of life. It is an autobiographical novel, told by narrator Gordon Lachance. Gordon Lachance looks back on his past and analyzes the events which happened on that labor weekend when he is twelve years old. Why does he look on his past? What is the purpose of looking back? The four main reasons are imposing control over the events which have troubled him for years, rediscovering the lost passion and pleasure of the writing, reliving the past to get some kind of wholeness in his life, and understanding the past in order to get ready for some future mortality.
